If you’re compassionate, committed, and looking for a rewarding career that makes a real difference, our Health and Social Care Skills Bootcamp is the perfect opportunity to take your first steps into this growing sector.
Running one day a week for 12 weeks, this fully funded course is delivered every Tuesday from 3rd June to 19th August 2024, and is supported by local employers who are actively seeking new talent.
You’ll gain hands-on experience, industry-recognised training, and the opportunity to meet health and social care professionals who can help guide your career path.
What You Will Learn
The course offers a well-rounded blend of theory and practical skills tailored to meet the real needs of employers. Topics include
Emergency First Aid at Work (Certificated by Highfield)
Learn how to assess and respond to emergency situations with confidence and competence.
Care Certificate Knowledge
Explore all 15 standards of the Care Certificate – the recognised foundation for all care roles. You’ll complete a workbook and present your learning to potential employers.
Skills & Baseline Observations
Gain hands-on experience in our hospital simulation suite, learning how to take blood pressure, record temperatures, and perform basic clinical assessments.
Safe Manual Handling (Certificated by Highfield)
Develop essential techniques for lifting and moving safely – crucial for any care role.
Safeguarding Awareness
Understand how to recognise signs of abuse or neglect, and how to protect both service users and yourself.
Understanding Specific Needs in Care
Use simulation equipment to experience and explore conditions such as dementia, hearing and visual impairments, and physical disabilities – and learn how to support individuals effectively.
Interview Preparation and Skills
Boost your confidence with CV writing support, mock interview practice, and guidance on what employers are looking for.

Assessments
There are no formal exams. You’ll be assessed through:
Completion of a Care Certificate knowledge workbook
Practical observation during simulation-based training
Attendance and participation in workshop-based sessions
Upon completion, you’ll receive:
Highfield Emergency First Aid Certificate
Highfield Safe Manual Handling Certificate
Petroc Skills Bootcamp in Health and Social Care Certificate
Entry Requirements
This Skills Bootcamp involves a commitment of 72 hours taught in person at our North Devon Campus.
Progression
This Bootcamp is designed to lead to direct employment or further training in the health and care sector.
Progression Routes Include:
Guaranteed interview opportunities with local employers
Entry-level care roles such as:
Healthcare Assistant
Support Worker
Home Care Assistant
Progression onto a Level 2 or Level 3 Health and Social Care qualification or an apprenticeship

Do I need experience in health and social care?
No, this course is ideal for beginners or those with limited experience. It’s designed to give you the foundations to start a career in the sector.
Is the course really free?
Yes – it is fully funded for eligible learners. If you are already in work and upskilling, your employer may be asked to contribute.
Will I get a job at the end?
You will be offered a guaranteed job interview with a local employer. Many of our previous Bootcamp learners have gone on to secure employment or apprenticeships.
Is there a placement included?
Yes – you will complete a minimum of 1 day (and up to 4 days) of work experience, helping you gain real-life insight into the care sector.
