Health & Social Care Industry Ready Programme
This course aims to provide learners with a comprehensive understanding of health and social care roles and responsibilities. Learners will be equipped with the knowledge of professional standards, communication techniques and key legislation in health and social care. Learners will be supported to develop transferable skills such as teamwork, resilience, time management and critical thinking.
Learners will complete a total of 350 hours of work placement in a relevant setting and attend college one day a week, focusing on core theoretical knowledge and professional skills.
These sessions will include:
– Introduction to Health and Social Care Roles
– Professional Standards
– Safeguarding Adults and Children
– Health and Safety in Care Settings (including Infection Control)
– Effective Communication and Record Keeping
– Person-Centred Care Approaches
– Professional Boundaries and Ethical Practice
Learners will create a portfolio of evidence, including reflective journals, work experience logs, and skills assessments.
Learners will complete a minimum of 350 supervised work experience hours in a health and social care setting. Placements will include roles such as:
– Care Assistants in residential care homes
– Support Workers in community care settings
– Healthcare Assistants in hospitals or clinics
– Specialised support roles (e.g., dementia care, mental health support)

Assessments
To successfully complete the course, learners will be assessed through a combination of a completed portfolio of evidence and verified placement hours:
Portfolio Completion: A comprehensive portfolio demonstrating skills, knowledge, and reflective practice.
Work Experience Verification: Completion of a minimum of 350 hours verified by placement supervisors.
Practical Assessments: Performance during placements observed by assessors or tutors.
Knowledge Assessments: Short written tasks, group discussions, and case study reviews.
Personal Development Plan (PDP): Evidence of skills progression and career goals.
Entry Requirements

– An enhanced DBS check.
Progression
On successful completion of this programme, learners will be well-prepared for the following pathways:

A: No prior qualifications are required. However, learners must demonstrate a keen interest in the health and social care sector and complete an interview and DBS check.
Q: How will I find a work placement?
A: Our team will support learners in securing suitable work placements. However, learners are encouraged to seek their own placements where possible.
Q: What happens if I don’t complete the required 350 hours?
A: Completing the full 350 hours is essential to meet funding requirements and achieve certification. Support will be provided to help learners meet this requirement.
Study Programme
Every full-time student at Petroc will have their own Study Programme which will include:

– Maths and English Language development – if you have not achieved GCSE grade 4 in either of these subjects.
– Work Experience – hours will vary depending on your qualification and course level.
– Tutor Support – to support your personal, academic and professional development.

– Personal Development Awards – developing six key areas of personal and employability behaviours to prepare you for the working world.
As this course requires you to undertake work placements with children and/or vulnerable adults, a DBS check is required.
