Petroc Launches Free Intro to Dentistry Course to Address North Devon Skills Gap

Petroc has announced the launch of its first free short course for adults, ‘Introduction to Dentistry,’ aimed at tackling the growing shortage of dental professionals in North Devon. Supported by Ian Roome, Member of Parliament for North Devon, the initiative seeks to provide local adults with an accessible entry point into the field of dentistry, offering insight into the profession and a pathway to further training.
The course has been developed to help bridge the dental skills gap in the region, where access to NHS dental care remains a challenge for many residents. Through hands-on learning and expert-led sessions, participants will gain a foundational understanding of dentistry and the career opportunities available within the sector.
Leading the course will be Michael Wheeler, Oral Health and Dental Care Professional Development Lead (Southwest) for NHS England, and David Smith, Dental Lecturer at Yeovil College. Their expertise will offer students a comprehensive introduction to key aspects of dental care, including oral health principles, patient communication, and hands-on practical skills.
This course is designed to open doors for those who may have never considered dentistry before. By providing this opportunity, we hope to inspire the next generation of dental professionals and improve access to quality dental care across North Devon. With the right training and guidance, individuals can take their first step into a rewarding career. This course offers an invaluable introduction, paving the way for further education and professional development.
The ‘Introduction to Dentistry’ course is set to begin soon, with applications now open to adults in the North Devon area. If you’re interested in taking part for FREE, you can find further details here https://www.petroc.ac.uk/courses/adult-learning-free-adult-courses/
