Certificate in Education (incorporating the Diploma in Education and Training), Cert Ed

This nationally recognised course enhances your employability as a teacher and is designed for applicants who hold at least a Level 3 qualification and/or substantial vocational experience. It leads to the award of a Certificate in Education (Level 5) from the University of Plymouth and includes the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (DET) within its structure.

Upon successful completion, the course provides the opportunity to achieve Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status in the Further Education and Skills sector.

As part of the entry requirements, you must provide evidence of securing an appropriate professional placement, which must include a minimum of 150 hours of direct teaching practice, plus an additional 30 hours of professional practice over the duration of the course. Support in exploring placement options may be available from the course tutor.

Assessments

This course tracks your progress over two years using lesson observations and coursework assessment including reports, essays and presentations.

Entry Requirements

You will need 150 hours of teaching practice, suitable qualifications in your subject specialism, and a subject-specific mentor. Additionally, you must have English/literacy at Level 2 and maths/numeracy at Level 2, a current enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, and two references—one of which should be from your employer.

Progression

You can progress onto BSc or MA in Education, or specialist additional teaching qualifications, for example in SEND
