NCS Programme Draws to a Close with Remarkable Success at Petroc

As the National Citizen Service (NCS) programme comes to an end, Petroc is celebrating a series of successful experiences that have positively impacted hundreds of young people across Devon. With the NCS contract nearing its conclusion, this year marked the final opportunity for students in the region to participate in the transformative programme.

Across both NCS contracts, an impressive total of 154 Petroc students and 248 students from other schools and colleges have taken part in over 600 NCS experiences.

‘Open to All’ Contract Exceeds Targets

The Open to All contract has been a tremendous success, with over 560 experiences delivered, surpassing the extended target of 515. Some notable highlights include:

  • Creative Industries Experience: Led by Jo Springett, 26 learners embarked on an inspiring trip to the Sky Academy in London, where they explored careers in creative media. This journey included independence-building activities such as an overnight stay in Reading, leisure time in Bristol, and a global food experience. Their achievements will be celebrated later this month with a showcase video presentation.
  • Healthy Body and Mind Experience: Under the guidance of Jo Bazley, seven Petroc students participated in activities focused on physical, nutritional, and mental well-being. From preparing healthy snacks and balanced meals using air fryers, smoothie makers, and steamers, to engaging in yoga sessions and outdoor activities, the programme encouraged holistic wellness.
  • Independence, Community, and Employability Experience: Facilitated by Josh Presley and Christine Ridgeon, 248 students from Dartmoor Multi Academy Trust and Bideford College benefitted from workshops on resilience, sustainability, study skills, budgeting, politics, and debating. Additionally, 37 Petroc T Level students received valuable employability support to prepare them for work placements.
  • Enterprise Experience: Guided by Chantal Tonks and Marcus Symons, a group of 24 Petroc learners developed their entrepreneurial skills by creating decorative fabric items. NCS funding supported the acquisition of essential equipment to help bring their business plans to life.

Targeted Contract Delivers Tailored Support

Through the Targeted contract, more than 150 experiences were delivered to Petroc learners, with a particular focus on building confidence and community involvement.

  • Confidence, Communication, and Community Experience: Under Jo Smith’s leadership, a group of 10 learners took part in an adventurous trip to Great Potheridge House, challenging themselves through various outdoor activities.
  • Independence and Healthy Living Experience: Jemma Grigg, Isobel Bradley, Lisa Cordery, and Laura Rice coordinated healthy activities for four groups of entry-level students. These activities included swimming, tennis, badminton, nature walks, and workshops on managing neurodivergence. Students also planned trips to the cinema, Exmoor Zoo, and Woolley Animal Farm, promoting both social and practical skills.

Celebrating the Impact

The NCS programme’s legacy at Petroc will be remembered for its substantial contributions to personal growth, employability, creativity, wellness, and community involvement. As the programme comes to an end, the achievements of these young people stand as a testament to the importance of providing meaningful, structured opportunities for personal development.
