The BTEC Health and Social Care Alternative Academic Qualification (AAQ) provides an exciting opportunity for students aged 16-19 to develop their understanding of the health and social care sector. The qualification is designed to be taken alongside A Levels as part of a full time study programme and can link to learning in a range of A Level subjects, including, Biology, Psychology, Sociology or English.

Students will study a range of topics that reflect the diverse nature of health and social care professions, including:
– Human Lifespan Development – Understanding physical, intellectual, emotional, and social development across life stages.
– Human Biology and Health – Exploring the organisation, structure and normal physiological functioning of the human body, and the effect on health of common disorders of the body systems.
– Principles of Health and Social Care Practice – Focussing on the principles that underpin meeting the care and support needs of individuals, which are the foundation of all services within health and social care

Assessments

This BTEC AAQ uses a combination of internally assessed coursework and externally assessed exams to ensure students gain both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Assessments include:



Coursework Assignments – Research projects, essays, and presentations.

Externally Set Exams – Testing knowledge and understanding of key concepts.

Practical and Work-Related Tasks – Applying learning to simulated or real-life scenarios..

Entry Requirements

To be accepted onto this Level 3 programme, you must hold at least five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including GCSE Maths and English Language.

Progression

The Health and Social Care BTEC AAQ is designed to provide multiple pathways after completion, including:

– Higher Education: Degrees in Nursing, Midwifery, Social Work, Psychology, Occupational Therapy, and other health-related fields.

– Apprenticeships: NHS and private sector apprenticeships in healthcare, social care, and support work.

– Employment: Roles such as healthcare assistants, support workers, or care coordinators in hospitals, residential care, and community settings.

FAQs

Q: Who is this course suitable for?

A: This course is ideal for students interested in health and social care careers, whether they plan to enter the workforce directly or progress to university.



Q: Will I have a work placement?

A: No, due to this being a part of the A Level timetabled sessions, you will be unable to gain practical experience. However, you may wish to pursue independent work experience outside of your timetable.



Q: How is the course different from A Levels?

A: The BTEC AAQ combines academic learning with practical application, making it more vocational than traditional A Levels. It is assessed through coursework as well as exams, providing a more balanced approach to assessment.



Q: Do I need prior experience in health and social care?

A: No prior experience is required, but an interest in helping others and strong communication skills are beneficial.
